When something is unusual it's pretty much different for whatever you might have expected. Not common, not ordinary, not what people do round here etc. It's also a useful way to make a comment or express a view without sounding judgmental or revealing your true feelings about something i.e. "Your new hairstyle is quite unusual" or "that's an unusual boil you have on the end of your nose" or "It's unusual to find you in such a good mood". I'd recommend that you proceed with care when you find yourself in this area of conversation.
